Week 1

Special education needs and questions can change throughout the school year, and the Edgeycator Family Resource Calendar is designed to meet families where they are, when they need it most.

Each month focuses on a timely special education topic, from starting the school year with strong partnerships to understanding IEPs, monitoring progress, supporting behavior, preparing for transitions, and planning for summer. Throughout the month, look for Edgey Tips, evidence-based strategies, trusted resources, and practical tools you can use to support your child and strengthen collaboration with their school team.

A successful school year begins with more than new supplies and a new schedule. It begins with connection, belonging, and relationships.

Throughout August, we're focusing on ways families can help their children start the school year feeling known, valued, included, and supported, while also laying the foundation for strong partnerships with their school teams.

Your child's IEP contains important information, but it can't capture everything that makes your child who they are. This week, we're talking about helping new teachers and school teams get to know the child behind the paperwork.

There is so much more to a child than what is captured in their IEP! The All About Me resource is a fun, strengths-based way for children and families to introduce themselves to a new teacher or school team. It provides space to share strengths, interests, learning and communication preferences, what helps the child feel like they belong, and what supports them when things get challenging.

Whenever possible, complete the resource with your child, not just for them. Their voice, interests, and perspective are an important part of helping their school team get to know the person behind the paperwork.
